Dear Nicole Levet very sadly died back in 2014. She was a lovely lady; full of smiles and wisdom. Her maiden name was Chambeyron, the daughter of Marius Chambeyron, one of the pillars of Ampuis life back in the 1960s and 1970s and one of the very first to domaine-bottle Côte-Rôtie. So young Mathieu here is the cousin of Agnès and, unsurprisingly, shares the same prime, granite terroir. Chambeyron is a bit like signing a new domaine with Vosne Malconsorts and Romanée St Vivant; exactly and to our mind, equally exciting. And I was convinced further still after chatting with the sommelier of the Georges V in Paris; their Côte Rôtie list judiciously only consists of three estates, Levet, Vernay and Chambeyron!
