Tasting in the cellars with Bertrand Chevillon is a masterclass on the crus of Nuits St Georges. Bertrand and his brother Denis farm no less than eight premier crus in the appellation. The Chevillons have Chaignots and Busselots on the northern, Vosne side and six 1ers south of the town including the wonderful trio of Les Vaucrains, Les Cailles and Les St Georges which are often of grand cru quality. The style here is for ripe, rich wines but never flashy or oak-smothered, indeed the transparency of terroir achieved here often breath-taking.
In 2019, Chevillon provided another masterclass and thrilling ride through the crus of Nuits St Georges.
As elsewhere, Chevillon’s 2019 entry-level wines are outstanding; both the Bourgogne and Nuits Vieilles Vignes are beautifully crafted Pinots. Upscale the Cailles and Vaucrains continue to defy their geographical similarity with two utterly different styles; the former beautifully structured and full of finesse, the latter richer and brooding. Both are absolutely stunning examples.
