This is one of the very best domaines in the Côte de Nuits, with brilliant holdings in the northern section of Gevrey Chambertin (Clos St Jacques, Comb Aux Moine, Champeaux and Goulots); plus Griotte Chambertin and Cherbaudes on the southern slope towards Morey St Denis. There are additional vineyards in Chambolle Musigny (Gruenchers), Morey St Denis (Clos Solon) and Vougeot (Les Petits Vougeots). Taking over from his father in his early twenties (note his own father had taken over the reins at just 14 years old) after stints with the legendary Henri Jayer and at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, Jean-Marie quickly breathed new life into the domaine with his insistence of using only old vines (30 years old and above) and of eschewing chemical pesticides and fertilisers.
The wines are super-clean, fresh, fruit-forward but never showy or superficial
In 2011, Jean-Marie began to source grapes from close friends, whose farming he trusts and whose appellations do not overlap with his own. Under his own label but made and raised in the domaine’s cellars; this new project has put yet another spring in Jean-Marie’s step and like a kid in a sweetshop he can now ‘play’ with a whole new selection from Vosne Romanee, Chambolle Musigny as well as the grands crus of Gevrey Chambertin. Now in his third decade at the helm Jean-Marie’s energy and enthusiasm means this is one of the most exciting domaines in Burgundy
